in Basics, The Girls, Trivia

Every Roommate pairing in Uma Musume as of September 2025

Listen, life’s been kinda stressful, I wanted to make something easy. Let me have this.

What the hell does the title mean though? Well, Uma Musume takes place mostly in a boarding academy and every girl shares a room with someone else. These pairings are often amusing at face value but the pairings are deliberately calling to some real life parallel.

So I will be listing all pairings as of September 9th 2025, to be more specific right after Espoir City got implemented. I will also be going through each girl in the order that they appear in the Character page of the official website (outside of the dorms’ managers as you’ll see) as I write things. They’re also divided in two dorms that parallel the real JRA’s Training Center divide.

While there’s been plenty of resources over time to keep track of this, I will be using this website (Miho version) and I recommend you do so to keep track of it for your own purposes.

If you want to corroborate the information, one good source is this Pixivpedia page which actually cites where it’s mentioned that they’re roommates (though it’s only limited to pairings people use in fanworks and it’s slightly out of date).

By the way, just add an “And they were roommates” mentally at the end of every opening paragraph for extra enjoyment

Get it? Got? Good. Let’s start.

Ritto Dorms

Dorm Manager: Fuji Kiseki

Predictably, being the manager means she doesn’t have a roommate. She was probably chosen as one from a meta perspective due to being the first Sunday Silence piece that showed the promise of that bloodline and thus looking after the others.

Special Week + Silence Suzuka

Spe-chan did decide to race after seeing Suzuka run in at least two continuities, after all.

In the real world both Special Week and Silence Suzuka were horses that Yutaka Take rode. Special Week’s Tenno Sho victory after Silence Suzuka broke a leg in that same race one year earlier being a particular point of interest that the first season of the anime loved to highlight.

Tokai Teio + Mayano Top Gun

The Turbogremlin pipsqueak with a big ego and the baby with an arguably bigger ego in the same room. There’s even an argument that could be made about how Mayano has the crown Teio missed in the Triple crown, or how both constantly look up to someone in the student council.

The connection is most likely related to Seiki Tabara, who was Mayano Top Gun’s main jockey (to the point that Mayano is arguably the embodiment in-game of Tabara’s career) and who rode Tokai Teio on its retirement Arima Kinen.

Daiwa Scarlet + Vodka

I’ve gone in excruciating detail about it, I don’t have time to go back into that hole. You can read at least 10k+ word about with the search bar of the blog.

MOVING ON.

Mejiro McQueen + Ikuno Dictus

The rich girl with a dorky streak, and the strict girl that makes a mess when she eats.

In the real world Mejiro McQueen was Ikuno Dictus’ first breeding partner (after estrus had to be induced via injections since it was slow to happen), with Yutaka Take (who rode Mejiro McQueen in its Senior years) speculating that Mejiro McQueen seemed to have its eye on Ikuno Dictus for a while.

TM Opera O + Biwa Hayahide

I find this pairing so amusing because it seems random but when you get a grasp for their characters it’s like “no yeah, these two would get along most definitely”.

In the real world Biwa Hayahide and TM Opera O were both part of Three Strong groups that chased the Triple Crown and they were both considered the strongest ones of their respective trios.

Narita Brian + Tanino Gimlet

The “cool” girl that makes sure to not say a word and the “”cool”” girl that cannot and will not shut up.

Their connection is that they’re both Nihon Derby winners sired by Brian’s Time. In fact, during Vodka’s training story in the game when she’s looking for advice on the Nihon Derby she goes to Narita Brian for it (Tanino Gimlet, Vodka’s real life father, wasn’t implemented at this point).

Air Groove + Fine Motion

The Empress and Her Royal Highness.

Not only are they both fillies that Yutaka Take rode, but they actually share the same trainer in Yuuji Ito.

There’s another thing but we don’t have time for that today…

Agnes Digital + Agnes Tachyon

The most moral idol otaku and the most amoral scientist. A girl interested in breaking the limits of the body and a girl that did what seemed impossible just because she simped that hard.

They’re together most likely because they share the Agnes crown name. Tachyon had a really short career so it’s really hard to come up with extra reasons.

Mihono Bourbon + Nishino Flower

An anxious big girl and a reliable small girl.

This one is on the more nebulous side, but I feel like the connection comes from how both were horses that shifted the path they decided to take. Mihono Bourbon got nicknamed Cyborg because it managed to be trained from a sprinter into a Triple Crown contender (going two for three before Rice Shower took the last race). Meanwhile Nishino Flower started as a Triple Tiara contender and even participated in two of the races (Winning the Ouka Sho, losing the Oaks and not participating in the Shuuka Sho but participating in the Queen Elizabeth Cup) before shifting to becoming a sprinter.

Hishi Akebono + Biko Pegasus

The biggest child and the borderline-smallest child in the cast.

In real life Biko Pegasus and Hishi Akebono were one year apart with Biko Pegasus being born in 1991 and Hishi Akebono being born in 1992 (funnily enough in the game Biko is a 1st year middle schooler and Bono is a 3rd year middle schooler), despite this gap however, they crossed paths and raced 10 times during their active years.

Admire Vega + Curren Chan

The angsty girl that tries and fails to hide how she feels and the e-girl that will not let anyone know how she truly feels because that wouldn’t be cute. They both also have a thing with dead siblings.

They’re both maternal grandkids of Tony Bin, but on top of this Kenichi Ikezoe (Curren Chan’s jockey) is a known and vocal Yutaka Take fanboy (Admire Vega’s jockey) which informs Curren’s constant gushing towards Ayabe.

Winning Ticket + Tousen Jordan

The emotional tomboy and the trendy gyaru.

While they’re both descended from Tony Bin (though Jordan is so via Jungle Pocket), both are also hard workers that had long careers. Winning Ticket remained as a Merit Horse (ๅŠŸๅŠด้ฆฌ, basically a horse retired from racing that remains in activities such as leading copetitors through the course and such) and Tousen Jordan ran for seven years from 2008 until 2014.

Air Shakur + Meishou Dotou

A girl with a non-existent sense of self-worth and a mean nerd that will talk down and berate everyone EXCEPT her roommate.

The theme here is “so close yet so far”. Air Shakur famously lost the Nihon Derby (its only lost Triple Crown) to Agnes Flight by 7cm, and Meishou Dotou remained a silver hunter right behind TM Opera O for a long time.

Incidentally, Air Shakur did cross paths with TM Opera O three times.

Eishin Flash + Smart Falcon

The aspiring idol gets the most punctual and precise girl to be her de facto producer.

In the real world they were both rivals in the Dubai World Cup. Two Japanese horses crossing paths overseas… and still losing.

Kawakami Princess + Seeking The Pearl

One can punch a hole in the wall an the other can jump from a rooftop.

In the real world both are fillies sharing Seattle Slew as maternal grandfather. Funnily enough while Kawakami Princess was so fierce the fences in the ranch had to warn outsiders about her, Seeking The Pearl was reportedly a really calm horse outside the track.

Gold City + Bamboo Memory

The disciplinary committee’s busybody and the model that can’t be punctual to save her life.

They faced each other in the 1989 Takarazuka Kinen… and both lost.

Super Creek + Narita Taishin

Oh to pair the girl that loves to pamper others with the girl that would rather be left alone. There’s a fun dimension in how Creek is ultimately like a child playing house while Taishin hides a more actively caring side.

In our world they’re horses that got Yutaka Take to victories in the Triple Crown, with Narita Taishin earning him the Satsuki Sho, and Super Creek earning him the Kikuka Sho.

Haru Urara + King Halo

One was scorned for the expectations she couldn’t live up to and the other was dearly beloved despite (and perhaps BECAUSE of) losing…

…and that’s what the parallel is in real life too, actually. Haru Urara was actually the only officially-named horsegirl outside of Montjeau and Furioso to not be part of the central racing circuit so the only connection in real life one can draw is thematic.

Rest in Peace Haru Urara

Marvelous Sunday + Nice Nature

Two big* girls. One makes sure to keep her expectations in check and one celebrates everything about being alive.

They both faced against each other in the 1996 Autumn Tenno Sho (won by Bubblegum Fellow, more on that down below).

*twintails

Machikane Fukukitaru + Machikane Tannhauser

Two very loud very unlucky girls.

Like with The Agnes Room, they share the same crown name.

Mejiro Palmer + Katsuragi Ace

In the game they’re both tied to the hip to a girl with her head on the clouds as they seek to race together

This is reflective of how things were in real life (with Mejiro Palmer always being by Daitaku Helios and Katsuragi Ace always being by Mr CB), they’re also both based on horses famous for their Big Escape strategy (basically going beyond just keeping ahead of the pack and making as much distance as possible in the process).

Thank you to dcd via email for also reminding me of the fact that both have another commonality: They were both black sheep. Katsuragi Ace had a weak back when young so he was considered a “trash horse” at age 2. Mejiro Palmer, meanwhile, was always “worse than Mejiro Ryan” due to always providing inconsistent results. And yet despite these low expectations they still managed to accomplish great things their own way.

Daitaku Helios + Tap Dance City

Very loud very gay party girls. The only ones louder than the Machikane Room.

Like with the Katsuragi and Palmer room, both of these horses were known for their Big Escape strategy when running. Aside from these four, the other two current girls with the ability are Silence Suzuka (first to get it) and Twin Turbo.

They have another commonality in that both had a “first to get this accolade since another older horse” thing going on. Coincidentally, Tap Dance City was the first to win Japan Cup AND Takarazuka Kinen since Katsuragi Ace. Daitaku Helios, meanwhile, was the first horse since Nihon Pillow Winner (father of his contemporary Yamanin Zephyr and contemporary of Katsuragi Ace and Symboli Rudolf) to win the Mile Championship two years in a row.

Satono Diamond + Kitasan Black

As Seen In Season Two And Three Of The Anime.

Speaking of the anime, the first three seasons have this thing where they put together girls that are exactly one year apart. These two do have a connection outside of the anime in that they were both the horses to bring their owners their first G1 victories.

Yaeno Muteki + No Reason

A martial artist and a Sengoku warrior.

They’re also both Satsuki Sho winners.

Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi + Mejiro Bright

One is slow to do things because her skin is paper and her bones are glass, the other is slow to do things because she takes everything veeeeeeeery calmly.

These two were actually rivals of sorts in real life, they faced each other four times and Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi won all of them.

By the way, I always love to point out that because everyone calls Tsuyoshi “Tsuru-chan”, Bright calls her “Tsuruchan-sama”.

Narita Top Road + Jungle Pocket

The friendliest girls you will ever meet until they aren’t.

In real life they faced each other around five times, they’re also both part of a trio that chased the triple crown.

Transcend + Wonder Acute

The yabai tech-head zoomer and the literal anime grandma.

In real life they’re both dirt racers that ran against each other multiple times.

Espoir City + Coppano Rickey

The most recent one as if me writing this. One if a deceptively short gyaru with an attitude (you’d swear she’s the one called Furioso) and the other is a deceptively tall Feng Shui master.

Contrary to the Transcend/Acute room, this pair didn’t actually face each other but almost continued where the other left off. Espoir City ran from 2007 to 2013 and then Copano Rickey ran from 2012 to 2017, meaning that Copano Rickey’s Senior era started right after Espoir City retired.

North Flight + Aston Machan

Image-savvy girls. One with an eye for fashion and the other with an eye for marketing.

They’re both fillies that chased the Sprinter life and Yutaka Take rode them at some point.

Daiichi Ruby + KS Miracle

One carries the expectations of her rich family, and the other carries the hopes of everyone that’s helped her with her sickly body so far.

This sort of contrast is also present in real life and they both faced each other in races. They were part of the same sprinter generation as Daitaku Helios and Yamanin Zephyr.

Cheval Grand + Win Variation

One is a chronic middle child that tries to be better but ultimately acts like it’s nothing and the other is an obsessive hater with an apple-themed sleep paralysis demon.

In real life they’re both descendants of Heart’s Cry, the only (Japanese) horse to have defeated Deep Impact.

Win Variation also feels for Cheval the way Rob Roy feels for Rice, in how it’s like they wanted to keep some of the anime characterization in-game somehow (more on that below).

Verxina + Hokko Tarumae

One tries to live up to the expectations of being the eldest of three sisters, the other tries to live up to the expectations of representing a city in Hokkaido.

They’re also both from the 2012 generation and I honestly can’t find much of a connection otherwise and one possible connection worth mentioning is that both had the accolade of winning the same race back to back in 2013 and 2014 (Tokyo Daishoten for Hokko Tarumae, Victoria Mile for Verxina).

Verxina actually has more in common with Meishou Doutou by being the only other horse to end up in second place four times in a row.

Viblos + Air Messiah

Both are the little sisters of their respective groups (literally or otherwise).

They’re also both Shuuka Sho (last race of the Triple Tiara) winners.

Curiously, Viblos’ jockey in the Shuuka Sho was Yuichi Fukunaga, the jockey of BOTH of Air Messiah’s tiara rivals Rhein Kraft and Cesario.

Dantsu Flame + Hishi Miracle

The most normal girls in a cast of eccentrics.

They actually faced each other about four times in real life.

Still In Love + Neo Universe

The two distinct flavors of a denpa character and that’s as much as I’ll say because I already had Uni on the shortlist and Still rocketed to priority and I don’t wanna derail myself here.

And at risk of getting sidetracked anyways, both are horses that their respective jockeys were VERY attached emotionally to and trust me it’s a whole thing, I’ll get to it eventually.

Rhein Kraft + Cesario

A Special Week and Silence Suzuka for the new generation.

They’re both Triple Tiara contenders with Yuichi Fukunaga as a jockey, believe you me I’ll talk plenty about them when I get to Part 2 of the Main Story.

Daring Heart + Fusaichi Pandora

Two gyarus under the same roof. One can KINDA speak english and the other is the game’s version of Miki Hoshii from Idolmaster.

They’re paired together because they’re both the real life mothers of a latter generation. Almond Eye being descended from Fusaichi Pandora and Daring Tact from Daring Heart.

Buena Vista + Gentildonna

If Uma Musume was an Otome, Buena Vista would be the heroine being chased by Orfevre, Dream Journey and every other yabai girl while Gentildonna is her best friend that will cave the face of anyone that dares make her cry.

In the real world they’re both horses owned by Sunday Racing, but there’s an argument for how both defied expectations for a filly’s career, with Buena Vista winning the Autumn Tenno Sho and the Japan Cup, and Gentildonna winning the Japan Cup and Arima Kinen AFTER winning the Triple Tiara.

Orfevre + Dream Journey

Any of you ever see Yu Yu Hakusho and get to the part with the Toguro brothers? Yeah, that.

They’re both real life siblings, and unless memory fails me or they add someone else later they’re the only pair that’s both siblings and roommates.

…man, to think when the blog started I pointed at like two pairs of characters like “these are the only explicit siblings because the real horses share the same mother”. How fast this game grows.

Calstone Light O + Durandal

Big dumbass that looks out of Muv Luv but is more out of Bobobo and slightly less big dumbass that looks like Saber but is more like a dog.

They faced each other in real life like four times.

Loves Only You + Chrono Genesis

One is an e-girl (of the streamer variety instead of the instagram variety) and the other is a history buff that never leaves with a massive Sony Pony DSLR.

In the real world they were both horses chasing the Triple Tiara with Loves Only You winning the Oaks, Chrono Genesis winning the Shuuka Sho, Gran Alegria winning the Ouka Sho, and Lucky Lilac winning the Queen Elizabeth Cup.

Unassigned roommates as of right now:

Here’s everyone from Ritto with no roommate yet:

  • Gold Ship
  • Sakura Bakushin O
  • Shinkou Windy
  • Sweep Toushou
  • Daring Tact
  • Believe
  • Samson Big (inferred, might be wrong)
  • Sounds of Earth
  • Admire Groove
  • Lucky Lilac
  • Stay Gold

It would be hilarious if Gold Ship’s rommate is Stay Gold but because Stego is never home it’s basically like she has the room to herself.

Miho Dorms

Dorm Manager: Hishi Amazon

Hishi Amazon didn’t retire early and actually had descendants, however if you think about it from the perspective of when the game released Hishi Amazon was the only responsible character that wasn’t already assigned to the Student Council. And even nowadays you can believe the dorms are only kept in check because she’s not afraid to get rough with the others.

Oguri Cap + Tamamo Cross

They’re a manzai routine made in comedy heaven… but really, the reason is simple: Both in-game and in real life the rivalry between Tamamo Cross and Oguri Cap was legendary, two horses from different parts of the countryside, with completely different humble upbringings, coming into the big city and showing them city horses what’s good.

They’re as much a singular item in the horseracing consciousness as Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka, where even as Vodka went on to have a career after Daiwa Scarlet retired, their legacies remain marked by the rivalry itself.

Taiki Shuttle + Mejiro Dober

The Golden Retriever horsegirl and the Doberman horsegirl always looking after each other.

The real life reason is a bit trickier to point out since they ran different kinds of races while one was a colt and the other a filly. However there’s actually a couple of details that the have in common in that they were both born in 1994 and went on to be popular enough to win JRA commendations a few years in a row. Those that remember my Vodka article remember how Vodka winning more such accolades than Mejiro Dober was a big deal. Both also later went on to be beloved figures in their ranches post-retirement.

Grass Wonder + El Condor Pasa

The demure girl with a samurai-like steely resolve and the boisterous musclehead that hides a scared and introverted self.

Not only are they the two foreign-bred horses that had to be kept out of the Triple Crown race of the Golden Generation, but they have the curious similarity of having more than one jockey and both sharing the same jockeys still, with Hitoshi Matoba being Grass Wonder’s main jockey right until the last race and being El Condor Pasa’s jockey for half of its career. The latter half taken by Masayoshi Ebina who also ran Grass Wonder’s retirement race.

Seiun Sky + Sakura Laurel

The girl that obfuscates and the girl that manipulates, two different flavors of trickster, two girls facing against rivals that won the Nihon Derby.

Both also share the same jockey in Norihiro Yokoyama.

Manhattan Cafe + Yukino Bijin

The creepy ghastly girl and the innocent country girl unaware that anything creepy might be happening.

Like with Ikuno and McQueen, Manhattan Cafe and Yukino Bijin had a foal together.

Mejiro Ryan + Ines Fujin

The humblest of the Mejiro clan and the girl working fifteen jobs to make ends meet.

They were rivals for the Triple Crown.

Rice Shower + Zenno Rob Roy

Small* gentle girls that love books and the feelings that stories can stir in oneself.

Both also lost in the Nihon Derby to a Triple Crown contender (Mihono Bourbon for Rice Shower, Neo Universe for Zenno Rob Roy), and both won the Tenno Sho (though Rice Shower won the spring one and Zenno Rob Roy won the Autumn one).

They also happen to be small dark-haired colts in real life.

One could also argue about how Rob Roy’s relationship to Kris S is the game homaging Rice’s relationship with Bourbon in the anime.

*you know why this asterisk is here, don’t make me say it, don’t make me point out Rice’s big ears Rob Roy’s chest size.

Inari One + Twin Turbo

Small* temperamental girls based on small and temperamental horses.

Inari One was a very moody horse that constantly kicked things, Yutaka Take who actually rode on all three of the Heisei Sankyo horses (Inari One, Super Creek, and Oguri Cap) recalls that Inari One made him scared. The real Twin Turbo, meanwhile, was a horse that got scared easily, its performance in races was so inconsistent because he didn’t so much “escape” as in the racing strategy as he “escaped” as in “I’m surrounded by horses and I’m scared I need to run away”.

*You get the joke by now…

Nakayama Festa + Sirius Symboli

A calm ameniable girl with gambling issues and a fuckboy (female).

They don’t really seem to have ANYTHING in common, especially when you consider one is a horse from the 80s and the other is from the 2010s, but they both made the trip to France for the Arc of Triumph Cup, Nakayama was the first horse to reach second place since El Condor Pasa and Sirius Symboli was the one of the first after Speed Symboli to make the tour.

Sakura Chiyono O + Mejiro Ardan

The innocent puppygirl and the sheltered rich girl.

They’re rivals both in and out of the game, with Mejiro Ardan being the second place arrival on the Nihon Derby that Sakura Chiyono O won.

Yamanin Zephyr + Curren Bouquet D’or

Bouquet hasn’t been implemented nor has had much screentime otherwise, but it’s easy to see the pairing of the gentle girl that loves flowers and the fairy-like girl that loves the wind.

In real life they both ran the Autumn Tenno Sho… there’s also an argument of how they’re both related to Turn-to (Bouquet via Sunday Silence, Zephyr via Sir Gaylord no really that’s a name I did not make that name up) but it’s so far back in both pedigree charts that it feels like grasping at straws and if we’re doing that Bouquet’s paternal grandmother is called Wind In Her Hair.

By the way, shout out to the comment I saw during research that said that Zephyr has big boobs while Bouquet LOOKS like she should have big boobs. I cannot unsee that and I don’t know if my life is better or worse in the aftermath.

Symboli Kris S + Mejiro Ramone

The most yabai room, the most intimidating room…. arguably the most boring room, honestly.

The connection between these two took me a while, one of the sources I mentioned up there comments that there was an attempt to breed them together that resulted in nothing, and while it’s not impossible (Mejiro Ramone had offsprings well into 2004) I cannot corroborate that information.

There IS a shadow of what might be theme in there, however. Symboli Kris S and Mejiro Ramone both had really high expectations for their offspring, but while Mejiro Ramone couldn’t produce healthy foals and often produced twins (which aren’t ideal in racehorse breeding, see: Admire Vega and Mejiro Ardan), Symboli Kris S was not only successful but his generics were so prominent that a lot of his descendants share his characteristic ear shape (both in-game AND in real life).

Satono Crown + Duramente

The two elites carrying heavy expectations on their backs.

In real life they were both part of the same generation and had the same trainer (Noriyuki Hori). They also faced each other about three times, notably in the Satsuki Sho (which Duramente won).

Bubblegun Fellow + Fenomeno

Every detective needs that one bartender to vent off some steam with. Fenomeno shares whatever ongoings she had in the disciplinary committe with Bubblegum Fellow who’s always happy to listen.

In the real world Bubblegum Fellow became the first 4-year old horse to ever win the Autumn Tenno Sho (basically first one to win in Classic era rather than Senior era, this is in old notation where a horse was born at age 1 so it would be at 3 years old in new notation) which came after the staff decided to try that instead of the Kikuka Sho. Fenomeno’s staff decided on the same thing for the same reasons but Fenomeno ended second in his Autumn Tenno Sho (against Eishin Flash).

Blast One Piece + Almond Eye

The effussive Boo-chan and the in-your-face Ai-chan.

Both horses are owned by Silk Racing.

Unassigned roommates as of right now:

And here’s a list of the girls not assigned to a room yet:

  • Symboli Rudolf
  • Royce and Royce
  • Sakura Chitose O
  • Gran Alegria

Exceptions

Here’s a quick list of characters that explicitly don’t have a roommate and are also not managers:

Maruzensky and Mr CB: While their living conditions aren’t explicit they’re not in the dorms. Incidentally, both are horses from BEFORE the grading system got introduced which might be related to it all..

Meanwhile, Furioso is a local horse like Haru Urara so they actually explained she’s living alone instead of indicating she’s in either dorm.

By the end of this research there’s two questions that remain in my mind.

The first is wondering what the spread would look like if the cast was wider from the get-go, like say… if all the 2010s dirt racers were available when they were assigning rooms and then maybe Smart Falcon would’ve ended up with Hokko Tarumae more a more direct idol connection. Or Wonder Acute would be TM Opera O’s roommate because they’re both Ryuji Wada horses.

The second is wondering why the unassigned names remain so. If they have hopes they will be able to secure the rights to a horse even back when they first started deciding on this, or if they just didn’t feel like there was a right match yet.

I was actually shocked at how much of the initial release lineup was mixed in with latter additions, or for that matter how few names remain without a mate by now.

One thing is certain of all these pairings though…

They sure were roommates.
